DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) is a validation system used to check that an e-mail has been sent by an authenticated person or mail server. An e-signature is added to the header of the email using a private cryptographic key. When the email message is received, a public key that’s available in the global DNS database is used to verify who actually sent it and whether its content has been edited in some way. The main purpose of DomainKeys Identified Mail is to stop the widely spread spam and scam messages, as it makes it impossible to fake an email address. If a message is sent from an email address claiming to belong to your bank or financial institution, for instance, but the signature does not match, you will either not get the message at all, or you’ll get it with a warning notification that most likely it’s not legitimate. It depends on mail service providers what exactly will happen with an email message which fails the signature test. DKIM will also supply you with an added safety layer when you communicate with your business partners, for instance, as they can see for themselves that all the email messages that you send are genuine and haven’t been meddled with on their way.
DomainKeys Identified Mail in Hosting
In case you host a domain name in a hosting account with our company, all the obligatory records for using the DomainKeys Identified Mail feature will be added by default. This will happen as soon as you add the domain name in the Control Panel’s Hosted Domains section, as long as the domain also uses our NS records. A private cryptographic key will be generated on our email servers, while a public key will be sent to the global Domain Name System automatically using the TXT resource record. Thus, you won’t have to do anything manually and you will be able to enjoy all the benefits of this authentication system – your messages will reach any audience without being rejected and nobody will be able to send emails forging your e-mail addresses. The latter is rather important if the nature of your online presence suggests sending out periodic offers or newsletters via email to prospective and current customers.
DomainKeys Identified Mail in Semi-dedicated Hosting
If you pick any of the Linux semi-dedicated hosting packages that we’re offering, you will be able to use the DKIM feature with any domain that you register through your new account without any manual intervention, as our innovative cloud platform will create all the obligatory records automatically, provided that the domain name uses our name servers. The latter is needed for a TXT resource record to be set up for the domain, as this is how the public key can become available in the global Domain Name System. The private key will also be added automatically to our email servers, so whenever you send a new email message, it will include our system’s e-signature. The number of junk emails keeps rising each year and very often phony addresses are used, but when you make use of our hosting services, you and your customers or partners will not need to worry about that.
